It’s been 20 years since River Phoenix died on October 31, 1993 at the Viper Room, where the 23-year-old Oscar nominee drank a “speedball” of heroin and cocaine dissolved into a drink before chasing it with Valium.
But leading up to that night, friends and movie colleagues saw Phoenix’s descent—the graying of his complexion, the changes in his sweetly hippie-ish disposition—and warned him about addiction. booths turned into prison cells; another might find the club converted into an airplane; another would have the black walls covered with aluminum foil.
The group begins the process of recovery and is an open group following assessment.
